Climbing on Ice

Climbing on the ice is quite dangerous but it can be very exciting. It is really an offshoot of mountain climbing and the difference is that you have to climb on ice. The entire mountain is filled with ice. Many people wonder why anyone would engage in this kind of dangerous sport but the adrenalin high is wonderful.

Climbing on the ice isn't for everyone. You need to have the right frame of mind in order to climb on ice. For a climber, climbing on ice provides relief from the tensions of the world especially when the temperatures are dropping to sub zero.

Climbing on ice isn't easy and you should get proper training before you actually engage in the sport. You just can't start ice climbing. It is a very dangerous sport and can be fatal as you can be involved in high accidents. You need to invest money and time in order to learn the sport properly.

There are many schools which provide training on ice climbing where the basics are taught. After this you can go on an easy expedition but a guide will always be there with you. It is advisable to take along a competent guide as they can teach you and prevent accidents from happening. Rescue becomes easier if you have an expert with you.

Ice climbing and snow climbing are expensive sports. In addition to normal rock climbing gear and equipment, you need to invest in crampon and ice axes. Travel expenditure can also be quite expensive and you would need several days before you can grasp the basics of ice climbing.

Climb on the dry rocks in the summer before you actually hit the icy slopes in the winter. Learn the basics of climbing especially tying the ropes, pulling up your partner, making harness and other techniques. This will help you to grasp the basics and concentrate on the ice instead of ice and climbing.

Ice picks and crampons are the basic ice climbing gears. You would be able to climb a 40-degree ice slope, with their help, without slipping. Ice screws, carabineers and harness would also be required. Helmets and boots are must-haves. Obviously, a responsible climber would always take some warm clothing, extra food and first aid kits with them. Don't go for the cheaper options. Remember that these tools and gears are the ones which would save your life in cases of real accidents.

Ice climbing is a very challenging sport that will test your physical and mental endurance. It is not for those with weak hearts and other ailments. You need to take smooth steps in order to conserve your energy. The more you expend your energy, the more tired you will become. Learning to ice climb can set you back by a several hundred dollars but the learning would be priceless.
